Asphalt Shingle Roofing in Mandeville, the Northshore & Baton Rouge
Atlas Pinnacle Pro · CertainTeed ShingleMaster–credentialed · Class 4 upgrades · 130-mph wind ratings — serving the greater South Louisiana area from our Mandeville HQ.
Asphalt shingles cover roughly 80% of South Louisiana homes — and they should, for most properties. Modern architectural asphalt outlasts the three-tab products it replaced, costs a fraction of metal or composite slate, and (with the right product line) withstands the named-storm wind events that define our climate. The problem is that most asphalt shingle quotes look identical on the cover page but very different on the warranty, wind-rating, and credential pages.

Epic Roofing is a CertainTeed ShingleMaster–credentialed installer and the Mandeville installer that Atlas product reps send their custom builders to. We name the exact product line on every estimate — Atlas Pinnacle Pro vs. CertainTeed Landmark Pro, Class 4 StormMaster Slate vs. NorthGate ClimateFlex — so the quote you compare against ours is the same product, not just the same category. Why Asphalt Dominates South Louisiana Roofs
Asphalt shingles became the South Louisiana default for three reasons: cost per square is half of standing-seam metal and a quarter of natural slate, modern architectural products carry 30–50-year manufacturer warranties, and the Class 4 impact-resistant lines now available earn the same insurance discount as more expensive materials. For most homes in Mandeville, Covington, Baton Rouge, or Metro NOLA, asphalt is the right answer — and the question shifts from "asphalt or something else" to "which asphalt line and which credential tier."
When asphalt is not the right answer
- Steep slopes above 12/12 pitch — at extreme pitches, standing-seam metal sheds water more cleanly and lasts longer. We will tell you if your slope is borderline.
- Historic preservation districts — properties in some Garden District, Old Mandeville, or Uptown overlay zones may require slate, wood, or standing seam to match the original. Local code dictates.
- Flat or low-slope roof sections — porches, additions, shotgun-style add-ons need TPO, EPDM, or modified bitumen, not asphalt shingles. Our flat & low-slope page covers those systems.
- Coastal exposure beyond standard wind ratings — properties directly exposed to open-Gulf wind paths may benefit from standing-seam metal or a FORTIFIED upgrade for the additional wind resistance.
For everything else — which is most South Louisiana homes — the question becomes brand and credential. That is the rest of this page.
Atlas Shingle Lines We Install
Atlas is Epic's primary architectural asphalt brand. Their product lines split into a standard architectural category, a designer category, and Class 4 impact-resistant within each.
Atlas Pinnacle Pro — the South Louisiana workhorse
Standard architectural. 130-mph wind rating with Atlas's HP42 high-performance nailing zone. Scotchgard Protector treatment that resists the black algae streaking visible on most older Northshore roofs. 30+ Atlas color options. Manufacturer warranty: lifetime limited (transferable, with Atlas's prorated structure). This is our default recommendation for most asphalt reroofs.
Atlas StormMaster Slate — designer + Class 4
Larger, slate-look profile with deeper shadow lines for premium curb appeal. Class 4 impact-resistant (UL 2218 Class 4 rating) — earns the LA wind/hail deductible reduction with most carriers. 130-mph wind rating. Strong fit for higher-end Northshore custom builds and Baton Rouge Country Club properties, where the homeowner wants the slate aesthetic without the slate price.
Atlas StormMaster Shake — designer + Class 4 (cedar shake look)
Same Class 4 rating and 130-mph wind as StormMaster Slate, with a cedar-shake profile instead of slate. Strong for craftsman-style Northshore homes and historic-style new builds in Tchefuncta and Money Hill. Same insurance-discount eligibility.
CertainTeed Shingle Lines We Install
Epic Roofing holds the CertainTeed ShingleMaster credential — a designation that unlocks extended manufacturer warranties (SureStart Plus) you cannot get from non-credentialed installers. The credential gives Epic-installed CertainTeed roofs the strongest warranty terms in the CertainTeed system.
CertainTeed Landmark Pro — the architectural standard
CertainTeed's most-installed architectural shingle. Standard 110-mph wind rating, upgradable to 130-mph with the enhanced nailing pattern (we apply the upgrade pattern by default on the Northshore and BR Metro). StreakFighter algae-resistance technology. ShingleMaster installation unlocks the SureStart Plus warranty — non-prorated coverage for 10 years instead of the standard prorated structure.
CertainTeed Presidential — designer/luxury
CertainTeed's premium architectural line — heavier weight, deeper profile, designer color palette. Common pairing on Beau Chene, Money Hill, and Country Club of Louisiana custom builds, where homeowners want more than the standard architectural look. SureStart Plus warranty applies; transferable to the next owner.
CertainTeed NorthGate ClimateFlex — Class 4 with cold-weather flex
The Class 4 impact-resistant line with SBS-modified asphalt for cold-weather flexibility (an unusual benefit in a Class 4 line — most stiffen in cold weather, which causes brittle failure under hail). UL 2218 Class 4 rating earns the LA wind/hail deductible reduction. 130-mph wind rating. A strong choice for BR Metro homeowners seeking the Class 4 insurance discount.
How to Actually Compare Asphalt Shingle Quotes
Most asphalt shingle quotes look identical on the cover page and very different inside. Five things to check before you sign a contract — whether the contract is from us, a competitor, or a storm-chaser.
- Exact product line named on the estimate. "Atlas architectural" tells you nothing — Pinnacle Pro vs. StormMaster Slate is a $4,000+ difference on a typical reroof. Insist on the specific line in writing.
- Wind rating in writing. South Louisiana's hurricane reality means anything below 130 mph is a downgrade. Atlas Pinnacle Pro is 130-mph standard; CertainTeed Landmark Pro is 110-mph standard / 130-mph with enhanced nailing — verify which one is on the estimate.
- Class 4 status if you want the LA insurance discount. Class 4 (UL 2218 rating) is required for most LA carriers' wind/hail deductible reduction. Atlas StormMaster lines and CertainTeed NorthGate are Class 4; Atlas Pinnacle Pro and CertainTeed Landmark Pro are not.
- Manufacturer warranty tier. Standard manufacturer warranties are prorated after the first 10 years. Extended warranties (CertainTeed SureStart Plus, Atlas equivalents) require contractor credentials Epic Roofing holds — ask whether the competing contractor is ShingleMaster-credentialed before comparing warranty terms.
- Underlayment + flashing spec. Synthetic underlayment vs. felt; peel-and-stick ice-and-water shield in valleys and at penetrations vs. standard underlayment everywhere. The shingle gets all the attention; the underlayment determines how well the system holds up between named-storm events. Both should be itemized on the estimate.
Class 4 Impact-Resistant: The Insurance Math
Class 4 impact-resistant shingles earn a 5%–25% wind/hail deductible reduction with most Louisiana carriers. The exact percentage depends on your carrier and policy — but the discount applies year over year for the life of the roof, which on a 20-year roof typically more than pays back the upgrade cost.
Our Class 4 lines
Atlas StormMaster Slate, Atlas StormMaster Shake, and CertainTeed NorthGate ClimateFlex. All three are UL 2218 Class 4 rated and qualify for the LA carrier discount programs. During the free inspection, we pull your declaration page, find the wind/hail deductible line, and run the carrier-specific math against the upgrade cost before you decide.
Stacking with FORTIFIED
If you are also considering a FORTIFIED upgrade — which earns a separate 5%–30% premium reduction and qualifies for up to $10,000 from the Louisiana FORTIFIED Roof Grant — Class 4 stacks with FORTIFIED at all three FORTIFIED tiers.
FORTIFIED Roofing →The Layered Warranty
Every Epic Roofing asphalt shingle installation carries three separate warranties stacked together. Understanding which one covers what saves arguments down the road.
Manufacturer's material warranty
Covers the shingle product against manufacturing defects. Atlas and CertainTeed both issue lifetime limited warranties on their architectural and designer lines — prorated after year 10 on the standard structure. We register the warranty with the manufacturer on your behalf at the end of every install (not your job to chase paperwork).
CertainTeed SureStart Plus (ShingleMaster-only)
On CertainTeed installs, Epic's ShingleMaster credential unlocks the SureStart Plus extension — non-prorated coverage for the first 10 years instead of the standard prorated structure, plus extended workmanship coverage backed by CertainTeed. Non-credentialed installers cannot offer this; if you are comparing CertainTeed quotes, ask whether the competitor holds the ShingleMaster credential.
Epic Roofing workmanship warranty
Five years on Epic's installation work, transferable to the next owner if you sell the home. Separate from the manufacturer's warranty — covers installation defects like flashing, ridge cap, valley work, and nail placement. The warranty document is signed and emailed at the end of every install.

Final walk-through + warranty registration

"Three quotes that all said 'architectural shingles' — only one named the actual product." We had three roofers walk our Covington reroof. Two estimates said "architectural shingles" with no product line specified. Epic's estimate said CertainTeed Landmark Pro with the 130-mph upgraded nailing pattern and SureStart Plus, line-itemed against the alternative Atlas Pinnacle Pro spec we asked them to compare. The math was clear once everything was on paper. We hired Epic. — Verified Google review
Asphalt Shingle Roofing FAQs
What's the difference between Atlas and CertainTeed?
Both are top-tier US asphalt brands with comparable quality at equivalent product tiers. Atlas Pinnacle Pro and CertainTeed Landmark Pro are direct competitors at the architectural standard tier. The biggest difference for Epic Roofing customers: our CertainTeed ShingleMaster credential unlocks the SureStart Plus extended warranty on CertainTeed installs. Atlas does not have an equivalent contractor-tier credential, so the warranty math sometimes favors CertainTeed for Epic-installed roofs.
How much does an asphalt shingle reroof cost?
South Louisiana asphalt reroof pricing typically runs $5–$12 per square foot installed. For a 2,000 sq ft home with moderate complexity, expect roughly $14,000–$22,000 for a standard Atlas or CertainTeed architectural reroof — more for Class 4 StormMaster Slate or NorthGate ClimateFlex. Roofle gives you a ballpark in under a minute.
Class 4 vs. standard architectural — is the upgrade worth it?
Depends on your insurance carrier and how long you plan to own the home. Class 4 typically earns a 5%–25% wind/hail deductible reduction year over year — on a 20-year roof, the cumulative savings usually exceed the upgrade cost. Pull your declaration page; we will run the math against your specific carrier during the free inspection. More on hail damage & Class 4.
What wind rating do my shingles need in South Louisiana?
130 mph at minimum. Atlas Pinnacle Pro is a 130-mph standard. CertainTeed Landmark Pro is 110-mph standard but upgrades to 130-mph with the enhanced nailing pattern — we apply the enhanced pattern by default on Northshore and BR Metro reroofs. Any shingle estimate below 130 mph is a downgrade for our climate.
Will the shingle installation void my insurance discount or premium structure?
No — a properly installed Class 4 or FORTIFIED-eligible shingle product earns the discount, not voids it. The contractor must document the installation correctly (UL 2218 Class 4 manufacturer certificate, FORTIFIED designation paperwork if applicable). We file the documentation; you submit it to your carrier with your declaration page.
Can asphalt shingles work with a FORTIFIED upgrade?
Yes — FORTIFIED certification covers the entire roof system construction (deck attachment, sealed roof deck, underlayment, fasteners, ridge attachment) and is compatible with any qualifying asphalt shingle product, including Class 4. Most South Louisiana FORTIFIED retrofits use asphalt shingles. The FORTIFIED page covers the certification pathway.
What's your warranty on an asphalt shingle install?
Three-layered warranties: manufacturer material warranty (Atlas or CertainTeed lifetime limited), CertainTeed SureStart Plus extension (non-prorated coverage for the first 10 years — ShingleMaster-only), and Epic Roofing workmanship warranty (5 years transferable on Epic's installation work). All three are documented in writing on every estimate.
