Slate is the right answer when:
- The home is in a historic preservation overlay where local code requires slate or compatible material — most NOLA historic districts (Garden District, Uptown, French Quarter, Esplanade Ridge, Lower Garden District) and a smaller number of Northshore historic estates.
- The property is owned by a multi-generational family or trust that will hold the home for 50+ years — slate's 75–150 year life amortizes to the lowest cost-per-year of any roofing material when the ownership horizon is long enough.
- The existing structural framing was built or has been reinforced to bear slate weight (700–1,200 lbs per square versus asphalt's 200–400 lbs per square).
- The roof slope is 4/12 or steeper — slate is not warranted below that pitch, and the water-shedding geometry stops working.
- Historic-tax-credit eligibility, architectural reviews, or future-resale market positioning require natural slate specifically (composite slate may not qualify in some jurisdictions).

Slate Quarry Origins We Install
Natural slate comes from four primary commercial sources worldwide. Each quarry produces stone with different colors, hardness, water absorption, and service life. The choice matters for historic matching, for color tolerance, and for how long the roof actually lasts.
Vermont slate
Quarried from the Vermont-New York border region. Color palette spans green, gray, purple, mottled, and black, depending on the specific quarry vein. Service life typically 75–125 years. Semi-soft compared to other slates — easier to cut and shape, slightly shorter life than the harder quarries. Strong choice for new-construction installs where color variety matters more than maximum life.
Pennsylvania slate
Quarried from the Slatington-Bangor region of eastern Pennsylvania. Color is uniformly gray-black, harder than Vermont, with a service life of 100–150 years. Common on East Coast and Mid-Atlantic historic restorations; matches the slate originally installed on many pre-1900 buildings.
Spanish slate
Quarried from Galicia in northwestern Spain, the largest commercial slate region in the world. Color spans gray to purple to black with a slightly different texture than American slates. Hard, dense, water-resistant, with a 100+ year service life. Common in new construction and contemporary installations, where the European aesthetic fits.
Welsh slate
Quarried from North Wales — historically the premium slate of British architecture and the standard slate of late-19th-century luxury construction. Used on the most demanding historic restoration projects where matching the original specification is non-negotiable.
The Structural-Engineering Prerequisite
Natural slate weighs 700–1,200 lbs per square (100 sq ft of roof area), depending on slate thickness and quarry density. Architectural asphalt weighs 200–400 lbs per square. Standing seam metal weighs about 100–150 lbs per square. Any retrofit from a lighter material to natural slate triples or quadruples the dead load on the framing.
What this means in practice
Most South Louisiana homes built for asphalt or composite cannot bear natural slate without structural reinforcement. Before we provide a quote for a natural slate retrofit, a Louisiana-licensed structural engineer must review the existing framing (rafters, ridge beams, supporting walls) and either confirm that the structure can bear the new load or specify the required reinforcement. We do not install natural slate without that review in hand.
What the engineering review includes
The engineer inspects the existing framing, calculates the dead load capacity, identifies any reinforcement needed (sister rafters, ridge beam upgrade, supporting wall additions, etc.), and produces a stamped report that we attach to the roofing permit application. The review typically runs $800–$2,500, depending on home size and complexity. Reinforcement scope, when needed, is performed by a Louisiana-licensed framing contractor, not by Epic.
When new construction is the easier path
For new-construction projects, the architect specifies the framing for slate weight from the start — no retrofit reinforcement needed. The slate scope is integrated into the build sequence. Most natural slate work in South Louisiana on contemporary projects happens during new construction, for that reason.
Install Spec: Copper, Lead, and the Detail Work
Slate's 100+ year service life means every detail on the roof must be specified for the same service life. Standard galvanized flashing — fine on a 25-year asphalt roof — fails at 30–50 years, forcing a partial reroof on a slate roof that still has half its life left. The flashing spec matters more than most homeowners realize.
Copper flashing
Standard premium spec for natural slate installs. Copper develops a natural patina over time, oxidizes slowly, and lasts 100+ years — matching the slate's lifespan. Used at valleys, chimneys, sidewalls, dormers, and step-flashing at every roof penetration.
Lead flashing
Traditional historic-property spec, particularly for European-architecture restorations and properties under strict historic-preservation review. Soft enough to mold to complex chimney profiles, durable beyond 100 years. Used selectively where the historic specification calls for it.
Slate nails
Copper or stainless-steel nails — never galvanized. Slate is fastened through pre-punched holes near the slate's center; nail failure forces individual slate replacement long before the slate itself fails.
Felt or breathable underlayment
30-pound felt has historically been the standard slate underlayment; modern breathable synthetic underlayment is acceptable for new construction. The underlayment outlasts asphalt-roof underlayment because slate itself does not trap heat the way asphalt does.
Slate Repair and Restoration
Most slate work we perform is not a full reroof — it is a repair scope on a 50- to 100-year-old roof where 95% of the slate is still serviceable, and a few hundred pieces need replacement. The discipline is matching the new slate to the original, so the patch is invisible from the curb.
Broken-slate replacement
Individual slate pieces fracture from impact (fallen branches, hail, foot traffic during prior service work) or simply reach the end of life ahead of the rest of the roof. The repair: remove the broken slate, slide a new slate of matching quarry origin and color into the existing course, and secure with a copper hook or copper nail.
Quarry matching
The discipline that separates a defensible repair from a visible patch. We source replacement slate from the same quarry region as the original, where the quarry is still operating; for repairs to slate from quarries no longer in production, we source from salvage operations or weathered roof reclaim suppliers. Color mismatch is the single biggest tell of a bad slate repair.
Salvage-and-reinstall
For historic-property repairs where original slate is irreplaceable, we salvage slate from inconspicuous slopes (rear-facing or low-visibility) and use it on visible repair locations — then patch the inconspicuous slopes with modern matching slate that won't be seen from the street.
Restoration assessment
