Asphalt Shingle Roofing in Baton Rouge, LA
The City-Parish reroof handout sets minimums for shingles, nails, and underlayment. Our written estimate names the shingle, its wind rating, and the underlayment, so two Baton Rouge shingle bids can be read side by side.
Two shingle quotes for the same Baton Rouge house can both pass code and still describe different roofs. The City-Parish publishes a reroof handout for areas where wind design is not required, and its minimums are modest: shingles from the lower wind classes are accepted where the design speed allows them, four nails go into each strip shingle, and one layer of underlayment covers a roof pitched at 4:12 or steeper. A bid built to that floor is legal. So is a bid built well above it, and the totals alone will not show which is which.
Joey Noto founded Epic Roofing in 2020 after a decade of commercial construction jobs around Baton Rouge, following his construction management degree from LSU. In our Baton Rouge roofing work, that background shows up on paper: the estimate states the shingle line, its wind rating, and the underlayment by name, and our crew installs what it says.
What the City-Parish Reroof Handout Requires
The handout's title limits it to areas where wind design is not required. It lays out what a shingle replacement must meet, and three of its lines matter most when you are comparing two bids.
The wind test behind the shingle
Shingles must be tested to ASTM D3462 and to one of two wind standards, ASTM D7158 or ASTM D3161. Shingles with a Miami-Dade approval are also accepted. Each wind-standard grade is identified by letter. On the D7158 scale, Class D sits at the bottom and Class H at the top, and the handout lets the lower classes onto roofs in the lower design-speed band.
Four nails as the starting count
The handout defers to the manufacturer's instructions for fasteners, with a floor of four nails per strip shingle or two per individual shingle. Shingle makers also publish high-wind nailing patterns that specify how many nails to add to each shingle, so the count on a bid indicates which pattern the roofer plans to use.
One layer of underlayment on a normal pitch
On slopes of 4:12 and steeper, a single layer of underlayment lapped two inches meets the handout. Porch and addition roofs pitched lower carry stricter rules.
The handout also points to separate instructions for geotagged inspection photos, and our CompanyCam log records each layer as it goes down. Which permit office and which requirements apply depends on your address.
The Lines on a Baton Rouge Shingle Estimate
- The product line and its class. "Architectural" alone names no product. The estimate names the line, such as Atlas Pinnacle Pro or CertainTeed Landmark Pro, with the wind standard and class it was tested to.
- The wind rating and the nailing behind it: Atlas Pinnacle Pro reaches its top wind rating with its HP42 nailing zone; CertainTeed Landmark Pro reaches the same rating only with its enhanced pattern. The rating on the estimate tells you which pattern goes on, and you can set it against the four-nail floor and any other quote.
- Underlayment by slope: Synthetic underlayment across the field, self-adhered ice-and-water membrane in the valleys and around penetrations, and the method used on any section pitched under 4:12.
- Flashing and ventilation: The flashing scope at walls, chimneys and pipes, plus the linear footage of ridge vent.
- Decking and permit lines: A per-sheet rate for any decking that fails at tear-off, and the permit as a separate written line, with the office that issues it.
Ask for the same five lines on the other bids you collect. When a quote leaves one out, ask that roofer what goes there before you compare totals.
Atlas and CertainTeed Lines on Baton Rouge Roofs
Our asphalt shingle roofing comes in two families, and the inspection visit is where you choose between them with samples in hand.
Architectural standards
Atlas Pinnacle Pro is our usual recommendation for a standard architectural reroof, fastened through Atlas's HP42 high-performance nailing zone. CertainTeed Landmark Pro is its direct counterpart. Landmark Pro reaches its higher wind rating only with CertainTeed's enhanced nailing pattern, which we apply by default on Baton Rouge reroofs.
Impact-rated and designer profiles
Atlas StormMaster Slate, StormMaster Shake and CertainTeed NorthGate ClimateFlex carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating. CertainTeed Presidential is the heavier, deeper-profile designer line. Whether a Class 4 roof changes anything on your homeowners policy is something to ask your agent, and we give you the product documents to ask it.
Registration and coverage
We register the manufacturer warranty on your behalf. Because Epic holds CertainTeed ShingleMaster status, CertainTeed roofs we install qualify for SureStart Plus, which keeps the first 10 years of material coverage non-prorated. Our 5-year transferable workmanship warranty covers the installation itself.
Nails, Bundles and Porch Roofs in Baton Rouge
Is a four-nail shingle job legal in Baton Rouge?
Yes, where the handout applies, and the shingle maker's instructions ask for no more. Whether four is enough for your roof depends on the wind rating you want, and the top wind ratings on our lines come with their makers' high-wind nailing.
My house is off Highland Road. Who issues the reroof permit?
That depends on which side of the St. George city limits the lot falls on. Since October 16, 2024, permits within St. George's city limits have been processed by the City of St. George rather than the City-Parish. Some homes many people think of as Baton Rouge now permit through St. George, and the permit goes to whichever office covers the lot.
Our back porch roof is almost flat. Can it get shingles too?
Only if it is pitched at 2:12 or more. Between 2:12 and 4:12, the handout asks for two layers of underlayment or a self-adhered membrane under the shingles. Below 2:12, it bars shingles, so we quote a low-slope membrane for that section.
Can I check the bundles when the shingles are delivered?
Yes, and we encourage it. The residential code requires the wrapper to carry the shingle's wind classification, so you can match the label to the line and class on your estimate before the crew opens a bundle.
If the handout minimum passes inspection, why go above it?
Passing inspection is where the requirement ends. Over its life, the roof also has to withstand tropical-storm winds and wind-driven rain, and the class, nail pattern, and underlayment do that work. We show you what we install and why, and the choice of line stays yours.
How would a future buyer's inspector know how the roof was nailed?
From the CompanyCam photo file, which shows the nailing and underlayment as each layer went down. Keep it with the house papers. Our workmanship warranty also transfers to the buyer.
