Asphalt Shingle Roofing in Metairie, LA

Jefferson Parish publishes a written specification for a Metairie reroof, from the weight of the underlayment to the spacing of drip-edge nails. We build the shingle roof to that sheet and photograph each layer as it goes down.

In Metairie, a shingle reroof follows a written parish specification. Metairie is part of unincorporated Jefferson Parish, where a reroof permit from the Department of Building Permits covers the job, and the work has to meet the residential code the parish enforces. The parish then spells out what goes under the shingles in unusual detail: heavier felt or synthetic in two layers, fastened with cap nails on a grid, or a self-adhered membrane in its place, finished at the edges with drip edge nailed no more than a foot apart.

The parish's published re-roofing process calls for geotagged photos at each stage and lists a final building inspection before the certificate of completion. Since August 1, 2025, state law has required parishes that issue permits to inspect reroofs on one- and two-family homes. That puts the record on the roofer's side of the job, which is where Epic Roofing keeps it anyway. Our crews log each install in CompanyCam, and on a Metairie roofing reroof, those shots are taken before each layer disappears under the next one.

Jefferson Parish's Written Shingle Reroof Specification

The parish's re-roofing rules apply to one- and two-family dwellings in unincorporated Jefferson Parish, which includes Metairie. A full shingle replacement falls under the reroof permit, and the attached specification draws its underlayment rules from the code's high-wind provisions. It reads more like an installation manual than a permit form, covering the underlayment, the fasteners, the edge metal, and the shingle itself.

The parish also gives a reason for keeping these records: together they form a data set it can share with property insurers about how well local housing meets building codes. Your reroof becomes one entry in that file. Whether it changes your own premium is up to your carrier, and we make no promise about it.

The Parish Spec, From the Deck Out to the Drip Edge

Underlayment weight.

ASTM D226 Type II or ASTM D4869 Type III or IV, which the parish describes as 30-pound felt or synthetic. Fifteen-pound felt is barred.

Two layers, lapped:

A 19-inch starter strip along the eaves, then 36-inch sheets, each overlapping the one below by 19 inches, so the deck carries two layers across its surface.

Cap nails on a grid:

Ring-shank or deformed-shank nails with one-inch metal or plastic caps, spaced 12 inches apart between side laps and 6 inches apart along the laps.

The self-adhered route:

In place of the doubled layers, the parish accepts a fully adhered membrane labeled to ASTM D1970, or four-inch strips of self-adhered membrane over every joint in the decking with a full layer of underlayment over them.

Drip edge at eaves and rakes:

Segments overlap by at least two inches and are fastened to the deck no more than 12 inches apart. Underlayment laps over the metal at the eaves and tucks under it along the rakes.

A classed, labeled shingle:

The shingle must meet the wind classification table in the residential code, and its bundle wrapper has to show that class.

Each of those layers is buried by the one after it, so the parish's process calls for geotagged photos while each is still in view, including the drip-edge nailing on every side of the roof. Our CompanyCam log captures each stage before the next one covers it.

What the Parish Permit Means for Your Metairie Roof

Will someone from the parish come look at my new roof? +

Yes. A final building inspection comes before the parish issues its certificate of completion, and state law has required that inspection for one- and two-family reroofs since August 1, 2025. Every stage photo we take stays in your CompanyCam album.

We only need the back slope redone. Does that need a permit? +

Epic pulls the permit whenever a job requires one, and the Department of Building Permits decides what a partial slope needs. The permit fee is its own line on the estimate.

Which underlayment route do you use on a Metairie roof? +

It depends on the deck, the pitch, and how much you want under the shingles, and the estimate names the route before you sign. Any of the parish's accepted methods, doubled cap-nailed layers or a self-adhered membrane, can be priced.

Is the old decking checked before the new layers go on? +

Yes. With the old roof stripped, we walk the deck, replace failed sheets at the per-sheet rate written on your estimate, and photograph each one. Cap nails and drip-edge fasteners need sound wood to grip.

Does a Kenner house follow the same parish spec? +

Kenner is an incorporated city with a separate permit office, so these parish rules cover Metairie and the rest of unincorporated Jefferson Parish. A Kenner roofing job is permitted and inspected through that city instead.

What paperwork do I keep when the job is finished? +

The certificate of completion from the parish, the full CompanyCam file, the shingle warranty we register with the manufacturer for you, and our written 5-year transferable workmanship warranty.

Choosing the Shingle That Goes on Top of the Spec

With the layers underneath set by the parish, the shingle is where your own preferences come in. We install Atlas and CertainTeed asphalt shingle roofing lines, and the estimate lists the exact product and its wind class.

For a standard architectural look

Our usual pick for a Metairie reroof is Atlas Pinnacle Pro. Owners who prefer CertainTeed can choose Landmark Pro or Presidential for a heavier, deeper profile. On CertainTeed roofs, SureStart Plus comes with our ShingleMaster status and keeps material coverage non-prorated for the first 10 years.

For impact resistance

The Class 4 choices are the two Atlas StormMaster profiles, slate and shake, which give a dimensional look on an asphalt base, and CertainTeed NorthGate ClimateFlex, each tested to UL 2218. Ask your carrier before you choose whether Class 4 affects your policy. We provide the manufacturer certificate for that conversation.

The Metairie Reroof Band and What Moves It

A shingle roof replacement in Metairie is priced between $13,000 and $23,000 for homes from 2,000 to 2,500 square feet. Within it, the underlayment route you pick, the pitch, the valleys, the shingle line, and any deck sheets that have to come out at tear-off set your figure, with the permit fee listed separately. The inspection is free and requires no deposit, and the written estimate will reach you within 2–5 business days.

The Crew and Credentials Behind Your Metairie Shingles

The crew that nails it shoots it:

Epic does not use subcontractors, so the crew fastening the drip edge is the crew photographing it.

Credentials on file:

Louisiana residential license RL886377, CertainTeed ShingleMaster and Atlas Pro Plus status, plus three IBHS FORTIFIED credentials held by founder Joey Noto for owners who want to build past the parish spec.

When a Metairie shingle roof still has years in it and one spot leaks, Metairie roof repair can keep it going until a full reroof is due.
