A quarter-size hailstone and a three-inch one pose different problems for a shingle roof. The small one mostly scuffs granules loose; the big one can split a shingle or punch through a vent hood. Before we climb a Baton Rouge roof after hail, we look up what was reported around the address on the storm date, because the size indicates what kind of damage to look for.

The visit is free, and we collect nothing at the consultation. You get aerial photos of each slope, close-ups of anything we found, and a written repair estimate.

Riverbend's June 2023 Hail and the Usual Baton Rouge Stone

On the afternoon of June 20, 2023, numerous reports and photos put hail of 2.5 to 3 inches around the Riverbend subdivision. Hail larger than golf balls was reported in the same area over the next hour, and one stone measured about 3.25 inches after it had already started to melt.

Those stones were bigger than the 2-inch steel ball dropped on shingles in the UL 2218 test, the one that earns a Class 4 impact rating. They also came late in June. Severe hail in Louisiana peaks from March through May, and on a late-June day, the long-run chance of large hail within 25 miles of a given spot is under 1%. That afternoon produced 19 hail reports across the region, four of them 3 inches or larger. Hail that far out of season is easy to shrug off. It was also the capital region's second hail day in five days, so a roof that came through the first storm clean may not have come through the second.

Smaller stones are the common case

Most hail across our Baton Rouge roofing area is smaller. Ping-pong-ball hail was reported near the Country Club of Louisiana early on March 31, 2025, and quarter-size hail at Lexington Estates on the afternoon of May 6, 2025. Back in May 2010, quarter-size stones were reported just east of the I-10 and I-12 split. May is the parish's busiest hail month on record. These smaller storms call for a closer, slower look.

What Each Stone Size Leaves on a Roof

We match the inspection to the reported size first, then let the roof confirm or correct it. Three size bands cover most of what Baton Rouge sees.

Two inches and up: breaks you can photograph

Stones this size can fracture a shingle outright, tearing the mat and leaving a split or a hole with crushed granules at the point of impact. Ridge caps, already bent over the peak, can crack along the fold. Metal takes it hard: vent hoods, pipe jacks and drip edge can come back dented or holed.

Golf ball to ping-pong ball: cracks under the surface

At 1.5 to 1.75 inches, a newer shingle often holds. An older one that has stiffened through years of Louisiana summers can crack beneath its granules without showing a split. We look for impact points with a dark, bare center, then check each one by hand for a mat that gives or has broken. The ridge and the metal flashings get a close look at this size too.

Quarter size and below: bruise or plain wear

Quarter hail seldom breaks a newer shingle. It can bruise an aging one or scatter granules, and on a roof fifteen or twenty years old, the hard part is telling a new mark from ordinary weathering. Each suspect mark is weighed against the stone size reported for that date before it is counted. If what we find is cosmetic, the report says so in plain words, and we price no repair for it.

Sizing Up a Baton Rouge Hail Report

Our house is near Riverbend and the roof looks fine from the yard. Could the June 2023 hail still have damaged it? +

It could. Fractures from big stones often sit high on the slopes, out of sight from the ground, and a split shingle can shed water for months before it leaks.

Hail in late June caught us off guard. Is a summer storm worth a roof check? +

If hail was reported at or near your address, yes, in any month. Spring brings most of it, but the 2023 storm shows summer can bring the largest.

How many broken shingles does it take before a slope gets new shingles instead of a patch? +

There is no fixed count. A few fractures on one slope can be cut out and replaced with matching shingles. Once breaks are spread across the slope, replacing that slope or the whole roof becomes the option to weigh, and when the call is close, we price both.

We have Class 4 shingles. Do they need a look-after like Riverbend's? +

Yes. A Class 4 rating does not make a shingle hail-proof, and stones the size of Riverbend's can still break one. Discounts for impact-rated roofs vary, so check with your insurer on what your own policy offers.

Can you tell us whether to file a claim? +

That choice is yours, and the policy terms sit between you and your carrier. Louisiana RS 22:1684 bars roofers from serving as public adjusters, so we do not negotiate or settle claims. You get a dated, photographed account of the damage and a written repair price.

Is the drone enough, or does someone walk the roof? +

Usually both. Drone photos cover each slope and the ridge, but a crack hidden under the granules has to be found by hand, so we walk the safe slopes.

Baton Rouge Hail Repairs by the Size of the Job

Replacing hail-broken shingles in one area, with a cracked ridge run or a dented vent hood swapped out along the way, runs $400 to $1,800. Once breaks turn up on several slopes, or deck boards under them have to be replaced, the bill runs $2,000 to $5,000. When fractures cover most of the roof, as stones the size of Riverbend's can leave them, a full reroof costs $13,000 to $23,000 for a home of 2,000 to 2,500 square feet, and Baton Rouge roof replacement covers what that job entails.

The written estimate follows the visit by 2–5 business days. Torn-off shingles or a limb on the roof from that same afternoon point to wind rather than hail and call for storm damage repair in Baton Rouge; a leak with no storm behind it is a job for ordinary Baton Rouge roof repair.
