Hail Damage Roof Repair in Gonzales, LA
On a newer Gonzales roof, loose granules prove little after hail. We read the shingles for impact marks and cracked mats, and repair what the storm broke.
A homeowner in Gonzales looks into the gutter the morning after a hailstorm and finds a layer of dark grit. On a roof only a few years old, that sight is less telling than it seems. New shingles shed loose surface granules for months after they go on, hail or no hail.
So when Epic Roofing does hail damage roof repair in Gonzales, the check sets the gutter aside and goes to the shingles themselves, looking for the marks a stone leaves where it struck. The inspection is free, and you get photos of each mark we found, or a plain note that we found none.
Gonzales Storms Big Enough to Mark a Shingle
Hail reports inside Gonzales are spread out over the years, but several have been large enough to matter to a roof. On the afternoon of March 31, 2013, hail larger than quarter-size was reported along Highway 44 in Gonzales. On the morning of May 1, 2016, quarter-size stones were reported in town, and the report noted dents in a car.
The biggest came on the evening of April 18, 2020. Pictures sent in from around Gonzales were reported to show hail near 1 inch, with a few stones near 2 inches mixed in. That mix matters. Most stones in a storm like that leave light marks, if any, while the few big ones can crack a shingle outright, so a roof can carry a handful of real breaks among many marks that mean nothing.
Many Gonzales houses are young enough to be on their first roof, and some of those roofs went on after that April storm. That is where granules mislead. Shingles leave the plant carrying surplus granules, added so the surface coat beds in properly, and the extra comes loose over the first months on the roof. The heaviest shedding comes right after installation and tapers off. It is normal and, on its own, no sign of hail.

What We Read on a Gonzales Shingle After Hail
Once the gutter grit is ruled out as proof, the check comes down to four things on the shingles:
The outline of each bare spot:
A stone knocks granules off where it lands, leaving a roughly round spot with a defined edge. Early shedding thins the surface evenly across a slope, leaving no edges at all. A bare patch with a shape gets a number and a photo; a uniformly thinner slope gets a note and nothing more.
What sits at the center:
At a true impact, granules are often crushed or driven into the asphalt, and the underlying layer appears dark and fresh. Where a shingle has simply shed, the remaining granules sit undisturbed right up to the bare area.
How the mat holds up:
A stone like those reported near 2 inches can crack the fiberglass mat without splitting the surface. We press each marked spot for give, since a cracked mat often feels soft under the thumb before it shows. A soft or cracked spot is damage on any roof, however new.
The few hard hits among many light ones:
After a mixed-size storm like April 2020, the marks that decide a repair are the handful of fractures. They are logged and photographed apart from the light marks, so the scope rests on what broke.
The drone covers each slope first, so we know where to put our hands on the roof, and the attic gets a look under any slope that has fractures. If what we find is only shedding and cosmetic marks, the report says so in writing, and no repair is priced. Every numbered mark is filed in CompanyCam with its photo and its spot on the slope.
Pricing Only the Fractures in Gonzales
If the fractures sit in one area, say a few cracked shingles grouped close together on a single slope, the repair generally falls between $400 and $1,800. When they turn up across several slopes, or vents and flashing were struck along with the shingles, the range is $2,000 to $5,000. Cosmetic marks stay in the photo record and off the bill. Our Gonzales roofing crew cuts out each cracked shingle and replaces it in place, lifts and reseals the course above by hand, and puts new nails where the maker sets them.
Fractures spread over most of the roof can tip the job toward a roof replacement in Gonzales. If what we find is a leak or wind-lifted tabs with no impact mark behind them, the fix is ordinary Gonzales roof repair instead. Nothing is collected when we visit, and your written estimate, with the numbered photos, comes within 2–5 business days.
Asked After Hail on a Young Gonzales Roof
Our roof was installed a few years ago, and after a hailstorm, the gutters are full of granules. Is that damage?
Not by itself. On a young roof, a gutter full of grit could be shedding, hail, or both, and the gutter cannot say which. The question gets settled on the roof by looking for round marks with crushed centers and testing the mat under them.
A few stones near 2 inches fell around Gonzales in April 2020. How would you know if any hit our roof?
By walking the slopes and pressing on the marks that appear to be impacts. Stones that size tend to leave cracks you can feel even when the surface looks whole. If your roof was put on after that storm, those stones never touched it, and we look only at storms since the install date. If you are unsure when it went on, closing papers or the reroof permit usually settle it.
Does Gonzales hail tend to come at one time of year?
Most of the reported hail here has fallen between March and May, including the 2013, 2016, and 2020 storms and pea-sized hail reported on Church Point Road in March 2011. Small hail has turned up in summer too.
The hail on our street was small. Is a check worth it on a newer roof?
Often, the check finds nothing to fix, since the quarter-sized stones reported here tend to scuff a young shingle rather than break it. It is free, though, and a written finding of shedding only, with photos, is worth having if a later storm does break something.
If we replace the roof someday, should we choose Class 4 shingles?
It is worth pricing. To earn a Class 4 rating, a shingle has to survive the drop of a 2-inch steel ball. That makes it tougher, though not hail-proof. Insurers differ in how they treat impact-rated roofs, so get your insurer's answer for your own policy before deciding.
What do you give our insurance adjuster?
Nothing directly; the photos come to you. You get the slope shots and the numbered impact photos to pass along if you file, and on request one of us meets the adjuster on the roof. Your policy and your claim are matters for you and your carrier. No contractor may legally cover or waive a deductible in Louisiana.
