Baker incorporated as a village on December 27, 1944, became a town in 1952, and was a city by 1962. In roughly one generation, a stop on the old Mississippi Valley Railroad turned into a city, and the houses built during that climb still line its streets.

From our Mandeville office, the trip runs about 70 minutes: I-12 west into Baton Rouge, I-110 north to where it ends at Scenic Highway, then LA 19 north onto Main Street. We set Baker visits by appointment. Call 225-396-8122 to pick a day.

A City Built Before the State Code

Census estimates place roughly two of every three Baker homes in the 1960 to 1989 window, and fewer than one in ten has gone up since 2010. That timing matters on the roof because of one date: Louisiana only began enforcing a statewide building code on January 1, 2007. Houses built during Baker's growth years were built before that statewide code applied.

Shingles wear out and get replaced. The plywood or board sheathing under them can stay in place for half a century, holding on with the same nails it went up with. So the decision that shapes a Baker reroof comes after tear-off, while the deck is bare. We photograph it and replace soft or delaminated sheets before any underlayment goes down; on a FORTIFIED reroof, the deck that stays is renailed to the standard. A new shingle can only hold as well as the wood it is nailed into.

Baker Permits and Your Two Policies

City of Baker Inspections Department

Inside city limits, the City of Baker Inspections Department issues building permits. Since August 1, 2025, state law has required permit-issuing cities to permit and inspect reroofs on one- and two-family homes, so a Baker reroof is permitted and inspected, and we pull that permit.

Floodwater and roof water are separate claims

By federal count, just over 3,600 Baker homes flooded in August 2016. If your house carries both a flood policy and a homeowners policy, the line between them runs through the roof: the federal flood program pays for water that rises from the ground, and it does not cover water that enters through a wind-damaged roof; that question goes to your homeowners or wind policy, under its terms. Ask your agent how this applies to your policy. Our notes trace the path the water took indoors, so the adjuster sees what came from above.

Louisiana RS 22:1684 bars roofers from serving as public adjusters, so we do not negotiate or settle claims. Our records go to adjusters for State Farm, Allstate, National General, Louisiana Citizens, USAA, and other carriers, and a crew member can join the adjuster's roof visit at your request. No contractor may legally cover or waive a deductible in Louisiana.

What a FORTIFIED Reroof Adds in Baker

A FORTIFIED Roof on an existing house requires the old roofing removed down to the sheathing. From there, the IBHS requirements include ring-shank nails, whose ridged shanks grip the wood, set in a tighter pattern; sealed deck seams; and locked-down edges with a wider drip edge and adhered starter strip. IBHS testing shows that ring-shank nails at closer spacing can double the uplift a roof deck withstands.

Joey holds three IBHS FORTIFIED credentials, and Epic appears on the state's list of approved Fortify Homes contractors. Once a roof earns its certificate, insurers apply a premium discount. The certificate runs five years; an evaluator's reinspection renews it, and it passes to the next owner when the house sells.

Up to 2× · deck uplift resistance IBHS measured with ring-shank nails at closer spacing

Up to 95% · reduction in water intrusion IBHS credits to a sealed deck

If You Own a House in Baker

I live in a 70714 home outside city limits. Who issues the permit? +

Unincorporated land outside the city is permitted by the East Baton Rouge Parish Department of Development. Send us the address, and we will confirm which office handles yours.

Can a Baker homeowner get a Fortify Homes grant? +

It depends on the round. The Louisiana Department of Insurance sets the eligible parishes for each grant lottery at ldi.la.gov/fortifyhomes, and East Baton Rouge was not on the Round 9 list. If a later round takes in the parish, the award must be approved before a Baker reroof begins; the FORTIFIED build itself does not depend on a grant.

Who holds the workmanship warranty if the house changes hands? +

The next owner. Our 5-year workmanship warranty is transferable, so it stays with the house when it sells.

What if my ceiling starts dripping on a Saturday? +

Those photos matter. A clear shot of the stain and the surrounding ceiling, sent when you call during business hours, helps us size up the tarp job before the visit.
