Roofing in Garyville, St. John the Baptist Parish
Pyramid-roof company cottages and shed-roof rear rooms, scoped with parish historic review in the schedule.
Garyville's mill sawed cypress, and cypress shingles were among the first products of south Louisiana's swamp mills, yet the 1990 National Register nomination lists no cypress as a roof material. In 1903 the Lyon Cypress Lumber Company of Chicago bought plantation land on an east-bank bend of the Mississippi, set its mill beside the railroad, and laid out a company town named for John W. Gary. The mill closed in 1931, and its worker houses on the old grid form the core of that listed district.
Garyville is about 80 minutes from our Mandeville office, by LaPlace and US-61 through Reserve. Call 225-396-8122.
Getting Around the Old Mill Town
- The Lyon-era grid: Historic Front Street and Museum Street by the tracks, Historic West, Main, and East streets toward the levee, and North Apple and Church streets above the rails.
- River Road (LA 44): The levee road, with the San Francisco Plantation house and Marathon's 1976 refinery at the east edge of town.
- LA 54 (Cypress Street) to Airline Highway (US-61): The road north, laid roughly along the company's old logging railroad, the Garyville Northern.

Roof repair in Garyville
On the district's pyramid-roof cottages, four hip lines climb to one peak, and that peak cap is the usual weak point. More on roof repair.

An award had to be approved before any roofer started work; the finished certificate earns an insurance discount. See FORTIFIED roofing.

Standing-seam metal in Garyville
Where a cottage still wears tin, the parish guidelines recommend keeping the old metal painted against rust; when it is past saving, we can price new standing-seam panels. See standing-seam metal.

Contributing Lists, Tax Credits, and Roof Shape
Is my house on the parish's contributing list?
The parish posts that list on its Historic District Commission page. Contributing status is one of the triggers for historic review of a reroof.
My house sits outside the district. Does it still need historic review?
Not unless the Parish Council has named it a local landmark. Otherwise, the reroof goes ahead on the regular parish permit.
Are there tax credits for work on a historic Garyville house?
Buildings in the parish districts may qualify for rehabilitation credits run by the Louisiana Division of Historic Preservation (225-342-8160). Ask them or your tax adviser.
Can I change the shape of my roof when I reroof?
Within the district, the parish guidelines deem a change to a historic roof's characteristics inappropriate unless old photographs or drawings show the building once had that feature. If you have a photo like that, bring it to the estimate visit.
Federal Listing, Local Rules
National Register listing by itself places no federal limits on a private owner unless a project uses federal money or a federal permit. The rules that apply to a Garyville roof are local, since the parish has also designated Garyville one of its four historic districts.

Filing in St. John, Meeting the Adjuster
St. John the Baptist Parish issues the re-roof permit. Where a historic review applies, the Certificate of Appropriateness request can be submitted with the permit application, and work starts once the permit is issued.
Louisiana RS 22:1684 bars roofers from serving as public adjusters, so we do not negotiate or settle claims. If you like, we meet your adjuster on the roof. Carriers we work with include State Farm, Allstate, National General, Louisiana Citizens, and USAA. No contractor may legally cover or waive a deductible in Louisiana.
Commercial Roofing in Garyville
The old commercial row on Front Street
Front Street sits inside the parish design review corridor, so exterior work on those storefronts may need commission sign-off. There and along US-61, our crews handle TPO, EPDM, modified bitumen, built-up, metal, and roof coatings under LA Commercial license CL69991, with written bids in 5–10 business days. See Commercial Roofing.
Both Sides of a Cottage Roof
The attic hatch and the drone flight cover the roof from both sides. The trip out is free, and the written estimate, illustrated with those photos, reaches you in 2–5 business days.
