Roof Replacement in Marrero, LA
Reroofs for older Marrero houses, planned around the deck under the shingles: what it is made of, how it was nailed, and what it needs before a new roof goes on.
On a Marrero house from the 1950s or 1960s, the deck under the shingles may not be plywood at all. It can be rows of one-inch boards up to a foot wide, the way roof decks were commonly built for decades. Boards shrink as they dry, and gaps of half an inch or more between them are common. A new shingle roof, whichever line you pick for a roof replacement, needs a solid surface to fasten to, so the condition of those boards decides how the job begins, sometimes with a layer of new plywood laid over them.
On Marrero roofing jobs like this, Epic Roofing reads the deck from your attic before pricing the work, so the board question is answered on paper before anyone climbs up with a pry bar.
Board Decks, Overlays and the Marrero Reroof
How can you tell what our Marrero roof deck is made of before the old roof comes off?
From the attic, where boards and panels look different and nail tips, gaps, and stains show between the rafters. If the attic is floored over or closed, the estimate says so, and the deck is confirmed at tear-off.
Is the overlay included in the reroof price, or added later?
The estimate shows the decking allowance and its per-sheet rate before you sign. Tear-off confirms what the boards need, and anything beyond the allowance is photographed and priced in writing before the work proceeds.
Will a layer of plywood over the boards change how the roof edge looks?
Slightly. The overlay raises the roof surface by the panel's thickness, so the drip edge and the flashing at walls are set to the new height.
Will an inspector look at our new roof before the job is closed out?
Yes. Since August 1, 2025, state law has required parishes that issue permits, Jefferson among them, to issue permits for and inspect reroofs on one- and two-family homes. Marrero is unincorporated, so the permit is issued by Jefferson Parish, where re-roofing permits are handled by the Department of Building Permits. The filing and the scheduling are ours to do.
How long is the house open to the weather when boards need an overlay?
We strip only as much roof as the crew can dry in that day. The overlay adds a step between tear-off and underlayment, so a board-deck reroof can take a little longer, and any change to the schedule comes to you in writing.
Once the deck is covered, how do we prove what was done to it?
With the CompanyCam album. It shows the bare boards, the overlay, and the nail pattern before each was covered, and it is yours to keep.
The Deck Under an Older Marrero Roof
Half of Marrero's homes were built by 1972, about a quarter were built before 1960, and only about one in nine were built since 2000. On most reroofs here, the deck under the old covering is the deck the house was built with, older than any shingle that has sat on it.
The residential code says asphalt shingles go on a solidly sheathed deck. Board decks can meet that, or fall well short of it. When boards shrink apart, shingle nails can land in the gaps and hold nothing, which weakens the roof's grip in a wind. Shingle makers commonly set a gap limit of about a quarter inch for their warranty, and where boards are spread wider than that, they call for a layer of plywood or OSB, 3/8 inch or thicker, over the original deck.
None of this is certain on a given house until we look. Some older Marrero homes have tight, sound boards; some had the deck replaced at an earlier reroof; additions can switch from boards to panels partway across a roof. From the attic we can usually tell which you have, and the estimate is written to match.

Board by Board at a Marrero Tear-Off
Tear-off settles what the attic suggested. Before any underlayment goes down, the crew works through this list:
- Deck type, slope by slope: Boards, panels or a mix, and where one changes to the other.
- Gap width: Measured against the shingle maker's limit. Wider gaps mean the overlay goes on before anything else.
- Loose or cupped boards: Re-secured so the surface is flat under the overlay or the underlayment.
- Split boards and knotholes: Cut out and replaced so no soft spot ends up under a shingle.
- The original nailing: Nail size and spacing where we can see them, and any that missed the rafters. This tells us whether the deck needs re-nailing and feeds the FORTIFIED decision.
- The eave and rake boards. Wind pulls hardest at the edges, so the boards that carry the drip edge are checked and fastened before the drip-edge metal is installed.
The written estimate includes a decking allowance, along with its sheet count and per-sheet rate. If tear-off shows the boards need more than that, we stop, photograph them, and put the added cost in writing before any further work.
FORTIFIED on a Marrero Deck With Unknown Nailing
The FORTIFIED Roof standard looks hard at deck fastening. When the existing fasteners are staples, 6d nails or nails nobody can identify, the whole deck has to be re-nailed with added 8d ring-shank nails to the FORTIFIED spacing. Sheathing must be at least 3/8-inch thick over rafters spaced no more than 16 inches apart, and damaged decking or framing is repaired before the work starts. Where the original nails cannot be identified, a full re-nail is included in the estimate.
Jefferson Parish was one of the parishes named for Round 9 of the Fortify Homes Program, which picked grant recipients by lottery and paid up to $10,000 per grant; later rounds are announced at fortifyhomes.la.gov. Grant work has to be approved before the old roof comes off, so check for an open round before a tear-off date is set. The crew has more than 30 FORTIFIED roofs finished, under Epic's state approval as a Fortify Homes contractor and Joey Noto's three IBHS FORTIFIED credentials. Choosing FORTIFIED roofing on a board-deck house usually starts with the re-nail line on the estimate.
What a Marrero Reroof Costs, Line by Line
The range for reroofing a Marrero house of 2,000 to 2,500 square feet is $13,000–$23,000. The deck work is a separate line item in the written estimate, and financing is available.
If a storm claim is part of the replacement, we photograph the roof and the deck, then join the adjuster on site at your invitation. Louisiana RS 22:1684 bars roofers from serving as public adjusters, so we do not negotiate or settle claims. No contractor may legally cover or waive a deductible in Louisiana.
Who Stands Behind a Marrero Reroof
A builder's training at the top:
Before founding Epic in 2020, Joey Noto spent 10 years in Baton Rouge commercial construction; his degree from LSU is in construction management.
Owner-run, no subcontractors:
Our own crew measures your board gaps, then lays the overlay and shingles. A 5-year transferable workmanship warranty covers the install.
If the deck is sound and the trouble is a few wind-lifted tabs, start with roof repair in Marrero before anyone talks about boards.
