FORTIFIED Roofing in Marrero, LA

The state law behind the Fortify Homes grant lists tornadoes beside hurricanes. In Marrero, where the damage surveys on record describe tornadoes, the choice between FORTIFIED tiers becomes a practical one.

When Louisiana set up its grant program for FORTIFIED roofs, the statute spelled out what those roofs are meant to resist: hurricanes, tornadoes, and other catastrophic windstorm events. The weather service damage surveys for Marrero streets put that wording to work, with five surveyed tornadoes between 2008 and 2025.

So the useful question here is what each FORTIFIED tier does on that kind of day, and what it leaves alone. Epic Roofing builds the roof tier from deck to ridge. The two tiers above it reach into framing, doors, and anchoring, and we say so before anyone signs.

Five Marrero Tornadoes and the Roof Damage They Left

Sort those surveys by what each roof lost, not by date, and they fall into three piles. Damage to the roof itself comes first. The Christmas Day 2012 EF0 through Oak Knoll stripped mostly shingles and damaged trees, and the brief EF0 of May 2, 2025, which set off near Belle Terre Playground, left minor roof damage on the homes along its track. The strongest of the five, the EF2 of December 14, 2022, belongs here too: it touched down just west of Luther Drive and damaged the roof of a home near the Mather Drive intersection.

Carports make the second pile: the 2012 storm wrecked a few metal ones, and the May 12, 2017 EF0 pulled the carports from two Mt. Revarb Street homes. Falling trees make the third. On March 19, 2008, large hardwood trees broke and fell onto roofs, damaging 13 homes.

The first two piles fall within the range of damage that federal guidance on tornado resilience treats as within reach of better building. About 95 percent of recorded tornadoes rate EF0 to EF2, and the damage at those levels can often be limited by good design and construction.

The same guidance carries a caveat: the wind guidance it draws on was not written for tornado wind, which acts differently. A FORTIFIED roof is a better-built roof for a Marrero storm day. It makes no promise about any one tornado, and no roof standard stops a falling oak.

What Each FORTIFIED Tier Does When a Tornado Crosses Marrero

FORTIFIED roofing comes in three tiers, each adding to the one beneath it. Set them against the damage in those surveys and the division of labor is easy to see.

FORTIFIED Roof: shingles, edges and deck

This is the tier a roofer builds. Its core is stronger, so wind has a harder time lifting the covering and decking, and it has a sealed deck that keeps water out if shingles are torn away. In practice, that means heavier deck nailing, sealed deck seams, and reinforced edges at the eaves and rakes. Stripped shingles head the Marrero survey record, and this is the tier aimed at them.

FORTIFIED Silver: what hangs off the house

Silver keeps the roof work and adds the parts wind pulls off a house: carports and porches, which get anchored, then the garage door, the other doors and windows, and the chimney and gable ends. Two of the five Marrero surveys name carports, so that anchoring item is easy to picture here. Those items belong to other trades; our scope is the roof.

FORTIFIED Gold: the roof tied to the walls

Roof-to-wall connections are Gold's job, and it is better to hear that before a tornado than after one. A FORTIFIED Roof does not strengthen how the rafters or trusses are fastened to the walls. Gold strengthens those connections, as well as the walls' tie to the foundation, and it is usually reached when a house is built or substantially renovated. On an existing Marrero home, that is framing and engineering work. Where an owner wants it, we price the roof portion and work around the framer or engineer.

Tornado Questions From Marrero Homeowners

Would a FORTIFIED roof have come through the December 2022 tornado? +

Nobody can answer that for a particular house. A FORTIFIED Roof changes how firmly the deck, edges, and shingles are held, and keeps the deck sealed if shingles go. The rafter-to-wall connection is left alone until Gold.

Is FORTIFIED only worth it for hurricane season? +

No. The standard deals with wind acting on a roof, whatever weather brings it, so the nailing, sealing, and edge work count on a tornado day too.

A tornado just took shingles off one slope. Should we patch it or wait on the grant? +

Patch it. The program pays only for replacing the entire roof covering to the standard, never for a partial repair, and grant work also waits on selection and approval. Keep the house dry now; when the roof comes due, build that reroof FORTIFIED.

What will a FORTIFIED roof set us back on a Marrero house? +

For 2,000 to 2,500 square feet, the reroof itself runs $13,000–$23,000, moved by pitch, valleys, and any deck repairs found at tear-off. The FORTIFIED items are priced on separate lines, sized to what your roof actually needs. The first visit is free and takes no deposit, and the new roof carries a 5-year workmanship warranty that a buyer can inherit. Ask, and we can start a soft-pull pre-qualification through GoodLeap or Hearth, which has no effect on your credit, since our financing extends to FORTIFIED upgrades as well as the replacement itself.

How does the grant lottery work for a Marrero homestead? +

Jefferson Parish made the list for Round 9. Winners are drawn at random from the households that register for a round, which the state posts at fortifyhomes.la.gov, and the grant, capped at $10,000, only covers work the program approves before it starts. The state also asks owners not to line up an evaluator or contractor before their name comes up. Once it does, the program steers you through picking from its approved contractors, Epic among them.

Beyond the lottery, what does the grant ask of a Marrero house and its owner? +

The rules the state publishes center on the house and its owner, including: a homestead primary residence, an active policy with wind coverage, a flood policy where the flood map calls for one, and replacement of the entire roof covering. Each round sets its own terms, so read the rules for the round you enter.

The Builder and the Camera on a Marrero Roof Tier

Trained on the standard:

The three IBHS FORTIFIED credentials are Joey Noto's; Epic is approved by the state as a Fortify Homes contractor, and more than 30 FORTIFIED roofs carry our crew's work.

Photos of what the shingles will hide:

The crew we send on Marrero roofing jobs is our own, with no subcontractors, and it shoots the deck nailing, sealed seams, edge metal, and starter in CompanyCam before the next layer covers each one. The evaluator reviews that file with the finished roof, and IBHS makes the call.

When tornado damage cannot wait for a reroof, a roof repair in Marrero keeps the house dry first. An owner who wants a new roof without the FORTIFIED items can still choose a plain roof replacement in Marrero, built without the evaluator's file.
